Is the course you need full?
A strategy for "getting in"
one of Kevin Patton's course sections
You want (or NEED) to get into a particular science section at SCC, but it's "full" and you can't register.
What can you do?
It's not possible to allow students entry into a course that is full. I know that folks will tell you to ask me to allow you into the course (or a particular section) when it's full. But I really cannot do that!
Why not? It's not just a matter of whether we can fit a few more bodies into the classroom. It's mainly a matter of how many students can be accommodated for a particular teaching/learning strategy in a particular course. We get many requests for "just one more" so for us, it's not REALLY just ONE more!
However, there really is a way that nearly always works to get in that "full" course anyway!
The follow strategy sounds riskier than it is. Of course, I cannot guarantee this strategy, but I rarely get a report that it has failed. So you really should consider trying it!
1. I suggest that you check enrollment status at SCC Connection EVERY DAY. There may be a drop from the course, and if you are checking, you may be able to enroll before anyone else notices the opening. I suggest that you enroll in ANY section of the course that becomes open. Then, if things do not work out as planned, you will at least have SOME section to attend.
2. If you have not found a spot (or a spot in your desired section) by the "purge date" when folks are dropped from enrollment for nonpayment, then I would come VERY EARLY on the next registration day after the purge day and enroll in person. It is likely that several openings will have occurred during the purge and you can take one of those spots. Historically, there have ALWAYS been openings after the purge. (Now that the first purge day comes earlier than in past years, it sometimes works to keep checking during the days after the purge for even more spots to open.)
3. If all that fails, then I would continue to check during the first week of class. Some students drop (or just do not show up) during the first week, so there may be an opening.
4. If you get in, but not in the section you want, keep checking. If there is an opening during the first few weeks, it may be possible to move from another section into your desired section, if OK'd by both instructors (if different). If you have enrolled in one of my sections and want to transfer to a different one of my sections, then that's no problem at all.
